Improve My Opportunities

"If you don't design your own life plan, chances are you'll fall into someone else's plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much."  Jim Rohn

Networking, work experience / internships, volunteering and education all link to the goal of expanding your skills and your network to improve your future employment opportunities.

On this page you'll find fact sheets, worksheets, tips and more to help you effectively consider and take action at this point of your journey.

Networking

The golden rule of networking is to take the approach of giving and providing value without expectation, to build up your reputation and personal brand. That positive ‘karma’ will come back to you in time.

Networking

For some, the idea of 'networking' can be quite daunting. Our fact sheet gives pointers on how to get started.

Work Experience

These days, work experience is not just for students. If you are an adult seeking to change roles, arranging first hand experience in an industry of interest can be an invaluable exercise.

Work Experience Top Tip!

If you make a strong connection with someone in your industry of interest through your networking activities, why not arrange to 'shadow' them at their job for a day?

This is a great way to ease yourself into the idea of undertaking work experience, and can provide insight into a 'day in the life' of someone who works in a future career path you are considering.

Use the opportunity to ask as many questions as you can (and take notes), as well as to expand your industry network further. It will help you to decide if this career is right for you.

Internships

An internship is similar to volunteering or work experience, with the following differences :

  1. Opportunities may be for current university students or graduates only, as an internship is often considered the 'missing link' between academic studies and work experience.
  2. Likely to be for a fixed period eg. Might be 3 months or 12 months in duration, for example.
  3. Is a structured program where the individual will have intentional learning goals and will actively reflect on what he or she is learning throughout the experience.
